Teegan was my science helper and let me hold the bag over his head and poke a pencil through! He was so sure it would leak like a balloon. But it didn't!
To make it more interesting, we used a small Ziploc bag, and a big one.
They tried to make it leak by:
- Putting a pencil through the bottom.
- Putting a pencil through the part that has air, and then water.
- Stretching the Ziploc bag and then putting a pencil through it.
- Opening the Ziploc bag so it isn't closed tightly.
- Emptying the bag with the pencils sticking through it, and then filling it up again.
If you'd like to do this at home it's fun and quick! The reason it doesn't leak is because Ziploc bags are made out of polymer. Polymers are molecules which allows it to be very flexible. The molecule "hugs" the pencil when it pokes through the bag, creating a seal. SUPER COOL RIGHT?!
Part of Mrs. Sanderson's class joined us today for our experiment. :)
